Review of Ontological Semantics

چکیده

In this book, the authors present an important body of work in computational linguistics, which they and their colleagues have been developing over the past 20 years. For a unifying perspective, they organize their assumptions, theories, and techniques around the theme of ontological semantics. Along the way, they critique many alternative views of semantics, which they distinguish from their own. Their analyses contribute to a much-needed debate about the history and future of computational linguistics, but to preserve some balance, teachers and students should keep a few of the alternatives on their reference shelf.

Constructing formal semantics from an ontological perspective. The case of second-order logics

In a first part, I defend that formal semantics can be used as a guide to ontological commitment. Thus, if one endorses an ontological view O and wants to interpret a formal language L , a thorough understanding of the relation between semantics and ontologywill help us to construct a semantics for L in such away that its ontological commitment will be in perfect accordance with O . Basically, ...

The Revolutions of 2011-2012 in the Arabic Countries and Ontological Security of Israel

This paper seeks to examine the effect of the revolutions of 2011-2012 in the Arabic countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) on Israeli regime's ontological security and its strategy of closure and deviation in the regional level. In other word, the paper tries to find the challenges the ontological security and identity of Israel is facing with after the occurrence of the awakenin...

New Developments in Ontological Semantics

In this paper we discuss ongoing activity within the approach to natural language processing known as ontological semantics, as defined in Nirenburg and Raskin (forthcoming). After a brief discussion of the principal tenets on which this approach is built, and a revision of extant implementations that have led toward its present form, we concentrate on some specific aspects that are key to the ...

A Time and Situation Dependent Semantics for Ontological Property Classification

This paper proposes a new semantics that characterizes the time and/or situation dependencies of properties, together with the ontological notion of existential rigidity. For this purpose, we present order-sorted tempo-situational logic (OSTSL) with rigid/anti-rigid sorts and an existential predicate. In this logic, rigid/anti-rigid sorted terms enable the expressions for sortal properties, and...
